Humility & Obedience
As I was reading Philippians this AM, something stood out to me in a new light... As Christians, we can get caught up in focusing too much on doing/saying “The right thing” instead of just humbling ourselves in a posture of “change my heart so that my desire is to do the right thing.”
The latter takes humility. If I’m honest, I don’t like to be made low, yet Phil. 2:8 says, “And being found in human form, he humbled himself BY BECOMING OBEDIENT to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Emphasis mine)
I’ve always read that verse as, “...he humbled himself by dying (not by becoming obedient), even dying on a cross.” But that’s not it. Jesus wasn't called to just die on the cross and Christians are not called to just modify their behavior. We’re called to humility and obedience, which leads to lasting change, change that in turn helps us to do/say the right things.
If Jesus didn’t humble himself and submit to God’s will first, He would have never willingly gone to the cross. He only asks us to do what He did Himself, and that is a true King.
May we strive to live in humble surrender to Him in order to experience timeless change and positive influence.
